Band Bio

Kurt Cobain met Krist Novoselic in 1985, where they both had a common ground in music, being big fans of the Melvins. They had a few attempts at forming bands, but untill the duo recruited drummer Aaron Burckhard, they weren't succesful.

Aaron Burckhard only lasted a few months until he was removed from the band for unknown reasons. After Burckhards' departure Dale Crover of the Melvins had a small stint as the bands drummer until Dave Foster came in.

The band went through a series of names untill deciding on Nirvana, including Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew, and Ted Ed Fred. They played their first show under Nirvana in march 1988, after whitch Chad Channing replaced Dave Foster.

In the same year the band released their first single on Seattle independent record label Sub Pop. The following year, the band released its first album, Bleach. Bleach only sold 30,000 copies on first release, but after the success of Nevermind, Bleach went platinum.

In April 1990, the band got back in the studios and began working with producer Butch Vig for the follow-up album to Bleach. During whitch time Kurt and Krist fell out with Chad Channing. He soon left leaving Dale Crover of the Melvins filling in. The band then went on to hire Dan Peters, with him they recorded the song "Sliver". Weeks later the original duo were introduced to Dave Grohl, who almost instantly joined the band.

Nirvana were looking for a breakthrough, and in 1990 they signed for DGC Records. With whom they recorded their breakthrough album Nevermind. Their first major single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" set the album moving, by december 1991, Nevermind was selling 400,000 copies a week in the US. To date it is recorded as being ten times platinum, with 10 million copies being shipped.

After the huge success of Nevermind, Nirvana wanted to diverge away from the clean cut sounds and went on to record their third studio album titled "In Utero". Which was released on September 13, 1993. The album was also succesfull, entering Billboard 200 chart at number one and to date being credited for 5 times platinum.

In early 1994 the band set out on a european tour. On march the 1st atone of the tour stops in Munich, Germany, Cobain was diagnosed with bronchitis and severe laryngitis. The next show was canceled and in themorning of March 4, Cobain was foun unconscious in their hotel roomhe was rushed to hospital wherea doctor told a press conference that Cobain had reacted to a combination of prescription Rohypnol and alcohol.

In the following weeks, Cobain's heroin addiction resurfaced. He was forced in drug rehabilitation. After less than a week, he escaped and took a plane to Seattle. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead of a recorded, self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head at his Seattle home, this was the end of Nirvana.

Why in 100 Best?

Nirvana were responsible for bringing alternative rock to a large mainstream audience. All three albums are at a stage of platinum and are still being sold regularly to date. Definitely enough reason to be in the 100best.
