Nashville

Description

Nashville was founded by the Wataugans as long ago as 1779. As a busy river port, the town quickly prospered and grew to become the capital of Tennessee in 1843. During the Civil War, Nashville was the first large confederate city to fall to the Unionists. Though badly damaged, the city was rapidly restored to its former grandeur.

Nashville is the 'Home of Country Music'. The Grand Ole Opry, now a famous country music venue and radio show was started in 1925. The Grand Ole Opry is now incorporated into the fabulous Opryland, a hotel/entertainment mega-complex. Also of interest is the Country Music Hall of Fame, with exhibits of all the famous stars, both old and new.

For something a little quieter, visit Centennial Park and see the full size replica of the Parthenon complete with statue of Athena - the building now doubles up as the city's art gallery.

Why in 100 Best?

Put on your stetson, grab your banjo, and start playing. If you can't play, get in line and join in the dancing. You'll have a great old time.
