Description
San Francisco was settled by the Spanish as early as 1776. The California Gold Rush of 1848 saw an explosion in the population, and even the devastating earthquake of 1906 proved only to be a hiccup in the growth of the city. The city, and the whole Bay Area with nearby Silicon valley enjoys a thriving economy. The impressive skyline of the financial district includes the signature outline of the TransAmerica Pyramid. The must-sees of San Francisco include Alcatraz (make sure you book several weeks ahead), the Golden Gate (the gold-red color is so charismatic), and lively Fisherman's Wharf. Also make sure you make several journeys on the historic trolleys - the brave ride on the footledge to the side - which is especially scary on the many steep hills. If San Francisco is fog bound, a small excursion to the nearby hills of Marin county nearly always lifts you above the fog, for some spectacular views of the whole Bay Area. |
