St Petersburg
Description Tsar Peter I had a wonderful talent in technical, architectural, and mechanical matters. His genius gave birth to the amazing city of St Petersburg out of barren swampland. Peter I spent 1703 to 1709 years in a small wooden hut designing and managing the construction of the city. The Peter and Paul Fortress was the first large building to be completed - it gave Russia command of the Baltic, a valuable ice-free sea-passage. The city is full of magnificent palaces, tree-lined avenues, and impressive monuments. The many canals - St Petersburg is nicknamed the 'Venice of the North' - are spanned by fine bridges. The most famous being the Blue Bridge across the Moika river. St Petersburg suffered the ignomity of 2 name changes in the 20th century - to Petrograd, and then Leningrad - thankfully it's rightful name was re-instated.
