Plot
McMurphy walks into the mental asylum ward during medication time - classical music is playing in the background, and all the patients are docile. He meets a hugely-built Native American - 'The Chief' - deaf and dumb. The patients are ruled by the domineering Nurse Ratched. Over the next few days, the rebellious (but seemingly sane) McMurphy tries to bring some life to the other patients - like teaching the Chief how to play basketball, and organising a gambling game for cigarettes. At a meeting with the psychatrist, it is suggested that McMurphy is simply faking to get out of going to prison (we learn he is a convicted felon). So McMurphy decides to do something crazy - to avoid being sent to jail - and hijacks the asylum bus, taking the patients on a boat trip. On their return, his ploy seems to have worked, as Nurse Ratched recommends that he stays in the asylum. Some scenes later, McMurphy finds out that Chief is really sane, just like him. Then, as a pay-back for causing a commotion at group therapy session, McMurphy is given shock treatment. He is undaunted. McMurphy organises some female company for a party. The party is a roaring success, but next morning there are terrible consequences. But Chief realises how to regain his life. |
