Plot

Mr and Mrs Bennet have five daughters. Jane, the eldest, is a quiet modest girl. Then comes Elizabeth, who has a sharp mind, and sharper tongue. Jane, Elizabeth and their younger sisters have a problem. According to the inheritance laws of 18th century England, when their parents die, the family estate will pass straight to their cousin, Mr Collins. Each of the girls must marry well to ensure her financial security.

The arrival of Mr Bingley, a single man of means, who takes up a lease on the nearby Netherfield estate, causes great excitement amongst the girls. Even more so when they find that Mr Bingley is bringing his friend Mr Darcy to the upcoming village ball.

At the dance, Mr Bingley takes a shine to Jane. Mr Darcy and Elizabeth, though, would not appear to be a promising match.

Why in 100 Best?
