Saving Private Ryan

World War II, Omaha beachhead. US Army rangers huddle in a landing boat ploughing its way through the grey sea to the beach. Minutes later the boat hits the beach. The rangers jump out onto the beach into a hail of fire from the beach defenses. Many men are killed as the infantrymen struggle to make progress. Captain John Miller leads a group of men up a narrow sand gully to the top of the cliff, where they make a vital breakthrough, taking one of the gun emplacements.

Sometime later, Captain Miller is given a new mission. To find and return to safety a soldier whose 3 brothers have already died in the war. The military top brass fear a media disaster if all 4 brothers die.
