The Shawshank Redemption

It is the late 1940s. Andy Dufresne, a young professional banker, is wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover, and is sent to Shawshank prison for 2 consecutive life sentences. Prison life is initially very hard for Andy, who is beaten and raped by some brutal inmates. Eventually, though, Andy befriends 'Red', a long-time prisoner. 'Red' has street-cred, and fixes it so Andy is ignored by the low-life convicts.

The prison warden learns of Andy's money skills, and uses him to help in his illicit money-laundering scam.

Many years pass. A new prisoner comes to Shawshank, and tells Andy he has information which could help him gain a re-trial. The warden has the new prisoner killed, so as to hold onto Andy's accounting skills. All hope seems lost. Andy, though, has had a lot of time to think of other plans.

Why in 100 Best?

You cannot help but be inspired by the film. No matter how many years pass, Andy never loses hope that one day he may find a better life.
